Hand-applied vs a booth
Why a person beats an automatic nozzle.
If you have ever walked out of a booth streaky, too dark, or faintly orange, the problem was almost certainly not your skin. It was that one formula was sprayed at one depth on everybody who walked in.
“Think of it like getting your car detailed versus driving through a car wash.”
The actual difference
A booth is a fixed set of nozzles firing a pre-set pattern. It cannot see you. It sprays the same volume of the same solution whether you are fair with cool undertones or olive with warm ones, and it cannot ease off on the parts of you that grab colour hardest.
At Studio Rhema an actual person tans you by hand, using a compressed airbrush gun and a solution mixed for you at the start of the appointment. That means the colour can be matched to your undertone and your target depth, and it means the application can follow the shape of you rather than a program.
| Automatic booth | Hand-applied at Studio Rhema | |
|---|---|---|
| Solution | One formula for every client | Mixed per client for undertone and depth |
| Application | Pre-set spray pattern | Follows your actual shape, by hand |
| Hands, feet, elbows, knees | Same coverage as everywhere else, so they go dark | Deliberately lighter, so nothing looks obvious |
| Depth | Fixed settings | Chosen with you at the consultation |
| Subtle result possible | Not really | Yes, and it is a common request |
| Someone checking the result | No | Your artist, in the room |
Why tans go orange, and why this one does not
Orange is a mismatch problem, not an inevitability. Every sunless tanner works through DHA, which reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of dead skin cells and turns them a colour. Which colour you end up with depends on the solution’s tone meeting your skin’s tone. Put a warm, heavily bronzed formula on skin with cool undertones and it reads orange. That is the whole mechanism.
In years of spray tanning, Studio Rhema has never had a client come back saying they looked orange. The reason is unglamorous: the studio carries a range of brands, bronzer colours and tan depths rather than one house solution, and every solution is tested in-studio before it is offered to a client. Matching is the job.
The colour you leave with is not the tan
Worth knowing, because it is the source of a lot of panic. The bronze you can see when you walk out is a cosmetic guide colour. It exists so your artist can see coverage while applying, and so you do not leave looking exactly as you arrived.
The real tan develops underneath it over 24 to 48 hours. Your first rinse is water only, to stop development. Once the guide bronzer washes off in a normal shower, what is left is smoother and more blended than what you saw immediately after the appointment. If you have only ever judged a tan by how it looked walking out of a booth, you have been judging the wrong thing.
Fading is part of the result
Because the colour lives in dead surface cells, it leaves as those cells shed. That is why the tan is designed to wear evenly and look cleaner as it fades, rather than going patchy, and it is why exfoliating the night before matters so much: starting on a fresh layer of skin means the tan fades evenly instead of in blotches. The full routine is in the prep and aftercare guide.
And what about a mobile service?
A mobile tan is convenient and, for some people, that is the deciding factor. It is also a stranger setting up equipment in your bathroom, with whatever lighting, ventilation and floor space you happen to have.
Studio Rhema is a dedicated private studio instead: proper lighting to judge colour, the full range of solutions on hand to mix from, and a room set up for the job. Appointments are one-on-one and unhurried. Which matters more is genuinely your call, but they are different products.
